(www.BlacksinHollywood.com) – While we constantly are confronted with headlines of dangerous journeys across the sea and overcrowded migrant camps, it’s hard to really understand the scope and gravity of the refugee problem around the world. Today, there are more refugees than at any other time in history, and sadly, half of them are children. In order to raise awareness and in honor of World Refugee Day today, Alicia Keys released a short film that aims to bring a new perspective to the global problem.
Directed by Jonathan Olinger, the 11-minute clip shows Keys as a mother of two who is forced to escape Los Angeles after the city is destroyed by bombings and war combat. “Creating this film really allowed us to imagine, What if we were the refugees?” the singer said. “What if we were the ones torn from the arms of our families and loved ones? How would it feel if this were happening to us?”
Keys, her children, and hundreds of other migrants set off toward Mexico where the government is wary of accepting so many displaced Americans. The powerful film, which is set to Keys’s new song “Hallelujah,” is heartbreaking and aims to move many to pledge their support and help for the cause. “I hope the film leaves people asking the simple question: What if it was us?” said director Olinger. “And that it ultimately blurs the lines between ‘us’ and ‘them’—as we are all human.”
